Chatsworth House, Derbyshire - Master Plan

Chatsworth is a Grade I listed historic building. It is essentially a rebuilding of an Elizabethan house by the 1st Duke of Devonshire at the end of the 17C, remodelled by the 5th Duke late in the 18C, and recast on a massive scale by the 6th Duke and his architect Sir Jeffrey Wyatville in the second quarter of the 19C. For over a hundred and fifty years, it has been a much-visited heritage site as well as continuing as the home of the Cavendish family who built it in the 16C.
Major refurbishment was last carried out in the 1950s, following the decision of the family to return and use the house; until then it had been largely closed down since its occupation as a school in the Second World War. Despite severe death duties, the 11th Duke and the present Dowager Duchess of Devonshire brought Chatsworth back to life, rethought the kitchens and bathrooms and introduced modern services so that the House worked as a family home. They also completely readdressed the opening of Chatsworth to the public, making the house, its collections, garden and park even more accessible than they had been. During their time, Chatsworth became the best loved stately home in Britain for the visiting public.
Fifty years after the family moved back into residence, it was agreed that the time had come for a further overhaul, despite the house having been carefully maintained and looked after. An application, was submitted in March 2006 for Listed Building Consent which covered two principal areas of work: improvements to the public route and alterations to the domestic accommodation. These works will be carried out in the context of the renewal of the service installations, the introduction of fire compartmentation, and the repair of the external stonework. It is has been agreed that  the work will be carried out in a series of phases – planned so that the house can remain both occupied by the family and open to the public.
