Art & Design College Refurbishment, Canterbury

Fanshawe has provided professional services for University College for the Creative Arts (UCCA; formerly Kent Institute of Art & Design) at all of its campuses, located in Canterbury, Rochester and Maidstone.  UCCA, a specialist Higher Education institute, provides courses in design, fine art, photography, architecture and visual communication.
Fanshawe was originally appointed to review UCCA's estate with a view to finding a solution that delivered a strategy for future growth.  The existing Canterbury Campus, at the time, had the poorest facilities of the three campuses but was felt to be an attractive area to students with international recognition and a good catchment area.  The campus was chosen as the best location to further the aims and ambitions of UCCA, but the main failings of the estate were a lack of available capital, "tired” and uninviting facilities and a “perceived” shortage of space.
Fanshawe's review of the existing estate included the following: - a detailed assessment of the condition of the campuses relative to their location; a review of how courses were delivered and how they would be delivered in the future; an analysis of student number forecasts; benchmarking use of space; suggesting options and proposing possible solutions; whole life costing of the options; alternative funding solutions.
On conclusion of the review, Fanshawe undertook a submission to the Higher Education Funding Council (HEFCE) which was successful in delivering a grant of capital to undertake major refurbishment and remodelling of the Canterbury Campus.
The project comprised an extensive refurbishment to five existing buildings and the construction of one new building including a new lecture theatre, spread over an overall area of approximately 9,300m²,  together with external works.  The works were carried out in carefully planned phases whilst the University was in occupation.
Fanshawe has continued to provide professional services to UCCA in all three campuses following the successful delivery of the Canterbury Campus project.
