New Sports / Teaching Building, Avery Hill

Two major new educational buildings at the Southwood site of the University of Greenwich’s Avery Hill Campus provide a substantial amount of new accommodation, including teaching, administrative and social resources, and mark the start of a programme to develop and define the identity of the site as a collegiate campus in its own right.
The Sports / Teaching building combines a large multi-purpose sports hall, which will also be used for examinations, with a 220 seat Lecture Theatre, which will be the primary teaching resource on the site, with changing accommodation, general teaching classrooms used by all departments for 200 students, with specialist resource rooms (mock hospital wards) for the School of Health and Social Care.
This 2,500m² building is tightly planned with careful attention to creating bright, naturally lit teaching classrooms.
The design of the Academic building provides a flexible structure capable of accommodating future change. The building takes a linear form with large span structural bays on the west side of the building running parallel to a narrow plan zone on the east side which can be subdivided into different configurations of cellular accommodation according to the needs of the programme. The building has been configured to provide 4 general teaching classrooms for 200 students, a school office for the School of Health and Social Care, a roof level suite of meeting rooms and workspaces for around 100 academic staff belonging to the Departments of Family Care and Mental Health and the Department of Health Development.
