In 2011, World Monuments Fund inaugurated the Watch Award. The award was inspired by the World Monuments Watch, which acts as a call to action on behalf of sites in need of help. The Watch Award is bestowed annually during the Hadrian Award Gala to recognise individual advocacy, activism, and extraordinary achievement on behalf of heritage preservation.
At a ceremony held in New York the Duke of Devonshire was presented with the 2012 Watch Award. The World Monument Fund wrote "The Duke of Devonshire exemplifies the spirit of the Watch Award. Through his work overseeing the restoration of the magnificent Chatsworth House Estate, he and the Duchess of Devonshire have ensured the long-term preservation of this vital part of British Heritage for the benefit and enjoyment of the public and future generations.
Caroline Kennedy paid tribute to the Duke and said how impressed she was by "the complicated planning and engineering of a comprehensive Master Plan which has restored the house, created galleries to show great Old Master Drawings and restored a neo-classical sculpture gallery."
